Portland District People: Jennifer Muller

Describe your job.DavidHillWinaryAugust2015

As a librarian I provide customer service and reference/research services. I also catalog books, develop and maintain a secure and quality  the collection and support the information and knowledge management needs of the US Army Corps of Engineers employees in both Portland District and Northwestern Division.

How does your job fit into our District mission?

The Portland District Library’s mission is to provide customer service, research assistance, access to technical resources, information services and a quality collection.

For people preparing for their engineering certifications, I can provide exam prep books and access to the American Society of Civil Engineers’ review webinars. For offices or individuals working on a Corps’ site I can help find historic materials to reference design or environmental information. For example, if someone wanted to know why a specific material was used in the construction of something, I can help locate that information.

The library also provides access to Interlibrary Loan, so if the library doesn’t have access to a book or journal, I can order it for from another library.

What do you find most rewarding about your job?

I enjoy learning new things and helping people locate the information that they need and assisting them in the performance of their duties. It’s like a scavenger hunt and I always end up learning something new every time!

What is the one thing you need in order to do your job better?

Internet access!

Does the librarian have a favorite book?

I don’t have one. I try to read one to three books a week and there are just too many that I love. I tend to gravitate toward science fiction and adventure genres. Recently, I’ve been reading the Dresden Files and a lot of interesting biographies.

Who or what inspires you?MountPisgahMay2016

There are a lot of people and things that inspire me, but a small thing that inspires me when I’m feeling down or am having a hard time is Zen Pencils, which adapts famous inspirational quotes into cartoons. It’s illustrated by Gavin Aung Than.

What was your first job?

My first real job was at Walters Art Museum, where I worked to digitize glass plate negatives for their digital collections online. But in high school, I worked at Bed, Bath and Beyond.

What do you like most about working for the Portland District?

The people, the location, the weather and the food!

What is the craziest thing you’ve ever done?

Pass … you don’t need to know that!
